Is My 5-Year-Old Ready for Kindergarten?

Many factors play into this decision, such as social & emotional maturity, self-help skills, academic readiness, and even their birthdate! 

Below you’ll find my Emily OT Kinder Readiness Guide! 

Self-Help Skills

  • Able to put on and take off shoes with velcro  
  • Dresses self
  • Wipes after going to the bathroom 
  • Can open simple lunch containers 
  • Packs their own backpack 
  • Able to carry a small tray without spilling items 

Fine Motor Skills

  • Uses scissors 
  • Knows how to hold a crayon or pencil 
  • Can draw a stick person 
  • Writes first and last name
  • Able to use fork and spoon for eating 
  • Able to button and unbutton large buttons 

Gross Motor Skills 

  • Can catch and throw a ball 
  • Can balance on one leg
  • Is able to skip 

Social/Emotional Skills 

  • Able to share with others 
  • Knows what is safe and unsafe 
  • Follows 3-step directions
  • Ability to problem solve (simple problems!) when frustrated 

Cognitive Skills 

  • Can Name body parts 
  • Knows the difference between things like; up & down, on top of versus under, small versus big
  • Can sing ABCs
  • Identifies all letters and can form about 80% of uppercase formations independently 
  • Can count to 10 and form about 80% of numbers 1-10

As a parent, it’s important to set up a home program & routine that fosters the development of each of the areas above.  

When I work with a family, I always make sure the parents have the tools & resources to create the most ideal home environment so their child can develop the skills needed for Kindergarten.
