Self-Help Skills
- Able to put on and take off shoes with velcro
- Dresses self
- Wipes after going to the bathroom
- Can open simple lunch containers
- Packs their own backpack
- Able to carry a small tray without spilling items
Fine Motor Skills
- Uses scissors
- Knows how to hold a crayon or pencil
- Can draw a stick person
- Writes first and last name
- Able to use fork and spoon for eating
- Able to button and unbutton large buttons
Gross Motor Skills
- Can catch and throw a ball
- Can balance on one leg
- Is able to skip
Social/Emotional Skills
- Able to share with others
- Knows what is safe and unsafe
- Follows 3-step directions
- Ability to problem solve (simple problems!) when frustrated
Cognitive Skills
- Can Name body parts
- Knows the difference between things like; up & down, on top of versus under, small versus big
- Can sing ABCs
- Identifies all letters and can form about 80% of uppercase formations independently
- Can count to 10 and form about 80% of numbers 1-10
As a parent, it’s important to set up a home program & routine that fosters the development of each of the areas above.
When I work with a family, I always make sure the parents have the tools & resources to create the most ideal home environment so their child can develop the skills needed for Kindergarten.
